They Need To Be Out

Exit-Only

As I still have to remind myself time and time again, edit people out of your life! It’s a continual process, like deleting your spam. Yet oh so necessary. There are those that you realize you don’t have anything in common with, there are those you have grown apart from due to distance or different life choices. And then those toxic people in the world that eat up all of your energy and only bring negativity to the table.

I recently spoke to a very wise 88-year-old woman who asked me how many friends I had. Interesting question. There are close friends, then your other friends, then friends by association of friends, coworkers, loved ones or family. There are lots of levels of friendship and therefore way too many “friends.”

But Magdalena Mercedes’ point was that it is important to have only a few friends and make sure they are very good ones. Otherwise, she says, I will spread myself too thin. In her opinion, you cannot truly be a good friend to many people, and if they have too many friends, they cannot be a good friend to you. Quality over quantity.

Lie or Truth: Which is Scarier?

lies

People hate me because not only do I expose the truth about them, I am honest about the Devil I am. Take it or leave it. I believe in being upfront and open because I don’t like to waste time on liars or waste time on lying.

Yes, sometimes the truth stabs but I do not believe in sugar-coating and I do believe in calling people out on bad behavior. I equally accept people calling me out on mine because the things I say are shocking and sometimes offensive, even though I don’t intend them to come across that way.

I have always been honest about my shortcomings, so how about before you lie to me, you take a good look in the mirror and be honest with yourself?

Who are you?

You all know who I am. And I am not always fun and pleasant. I am loyal, but mostly unforgiving when you’ve crossed my path after I’ve fought for you. But now you fight against me? Good riddance.

I am very particular and protective about the people in my circle and quite thought I had the skill down, but there are still jerks in disguise that not only drain me, but make me look like a jerk in my loud self-defense. Oh, you’re the quiet one in front of friends so you are good.

NO. Just because everyone else doesn’t hear what you say to me doesn’t mean that I didn’t hear it.

But all my neighbors do hear you in the middle of the night as well as hear their walls shake and it’s embarrassing for me to even defend you because everyone is so worried about me. Just trying to live a normal life. And it really is awesome without the toxic people.

If you own yourself and your ish from jump, it’s someone else’s fault if he or she gets involved. If you lie about ish from jump, it’s your own g-d fault that that crashed and burned all over you.

Why You Need To Watch Teen Witch

Teen Witch

Let’s get Halloween-ey!!  I loved Teen Witch well before I was even a pre-teen, but I recently felt the need to see it again. It’s still so relevant!

Here is why my younger millenial friends should watch it: Imagine every 80’s teen movie meets Grease and Mean Girls with a sprinkling of Hocus Pocus.

The Characters:

♠Louise, played by Robyn Lively who is super awesome in the role (and—I just found out—older half-sister of Blake Lively)

♠The creepy woman from Poltergeist also stars! (You know her; that voice is unforgettable)

♠Brad, the hot guy lead, looks like the better version of young Tom Cruise

♠Louise’s little brother is Goonies-kitsch, fat, and super weird/funny

♠The mom is superhot, the dad is not. But they are both nerdy in typical 80s sitcom-couple style.

♠Special sightings of people playing high school students that may now be dead, like Lara Flynn Boyle.

Fantastical Cheesery:

♠Opening credits dream scene (romance-novel cringeworthy)

♠Locker room 80’s aerobics dance number

♠The white rap boys in all their numbers

♠Really, all of the musical numbers

♠The big hair, the pink parade, the tutu tulle mini skirts. Bring me back! I was just starting school then, but I had similar outfits by the time I hit first grade and the pictures to prove it.

♠Like every teen movie that ends at prom, but the hairah, the hairah!

♠The Voodoo doll scene with the teacher is a display of brilliant revenge

Dialogue:

“I mean, everyone tells me I’m going to be a big heartbreaker when I’m older, but I want to be, like, now.”

“I’m hot and you’re not, but if you wanna get with me I’ll give it one shot. TOP THAT.”

“That is just too depressing to believe.”

“Take note kitten, it doesn’t really matter how others see you; it’s how you see yourself.”

“The price of fame and fortune is to be envied, then copied and finally discarded. I read it somewhere. Probably Rob Lowe.”

Yes, kids, this really is an awesome flick. If you can’t find it, watch it at my house as you nurse your hangover after #Halloween2015.

Go Get It

make a moveMost of my major relationships (3 out of my 5 boyfriends) involved me going after the guy. Sometimes guys are too shy to make the first move, so if you’re semi-confident he’s into you even just a little (and even if you only want to hook up with him), just go for it.

It’s as simple as saying, “I’m into you.” It’s never failed me. If you want to be less obvious, just be flirty and gauge his reactions. My main point is, though, that guys are sometimes too shy to make the first move.

Don’t be afraid to be ballsy and go after what you want.

Even if you get rejected (not likely if you’re reading non-verbal clues accurately), you’ll at least gain the confidence of having tried which will make you…

Good for the next one!

What About Crazy?

attractionA few weeks ago, someone said, “What is it about you that crazy random people always want to talk to you? What is it about you that attracts crazy?”

I hadn’t really thought about it until then, but I have realized that I’m constantly working to eliminate crazy people from my life. I can still have great conversations with strangers, but now I’ve started to worry because it’s true: Crazies love me. It’s one thing to be a crazy party “friend”; it’s quite another when strangers under the guise of normal feel like they can connect with you and you give them the time of day because you for once have it and love to help people.

But then it becomes crazy every day once these people attach themselves to you. It is emotionally exhausting and elicits the crazy out of me. Yes, I am becoming crazy because of other people.

Callaloo with Poached Eggs and Bacon

Callaloo topped with eggs and bacon
Callaloo topped with eggs and bacon

In Negril Jamaica, my traveling companions and I ate breakfast most days at Citronella, where we each had a house and the resort to ourselves.

The first day, I ordered the mixed greens plate, which is callaloo topped with two eggs, a side of bacon and toast (all for a mere $8 US).

I found this to be a great way to start the day. We never ate lunch our whole week there except for the one time we missed breakfast.

Being on the water all day, I found that the callaloo breakfast was the perfect meal for energy that lasts from 8am-8pm.

When I got back to the states, I wanted to re-create it. While we don’t have callaloo in my local markets, spinach has a very similar flavor. I added garlic for a kick. My egg-poaching skills are not the best, but see below for my take on this recipe for an awesome energy-producing breakfast.
